This is a very common edgebanding issue, especially on cabinet parts with pre-drilled hinge holes. Below is a clear explanation, causes, and proven fixes that work on most edgebanders.
When an edgebander chips or pulls away melamine around hinge cup holes, it’s almost always caused by mechanical stress or cutting pressure acting on an already weakened panel face.

Common Symptoms:
Chips or blowout around hinge holes;
Rough edges at the panel/band interface, especially near pre-drilled holes;
Inconsistent glue line or band adhesion around the hole areas.
1. Dull or Incorrect Drill Bits (Most Common Cause)
A worn-out or incorrect 35mm Forstner bit will crush or tear melamine surfaces instead of cleanly cutting them.
CNC routers nesting with old bits can worsen this, as the bit drags or splinters TFL/HPL when exiting or entering near panel edges.
2. Improper Chip Evacuation
Forstner bits don’t eject chips automatically.
If not periodically cleared, the bit may force chips between the cutting edge and the panel surface—causing microfractures or blowout.
3. Panel Orientation and Nesting
Panels cut too close to hinge holes (e.g., on the edge of a nested sheet) are more prone to splintering when banded, especially if hole walls are unsupported.
Poor nesting strategies or incorrect tool paths can leave fragile veneer areas vulnerable.

✔️ Best Practices to Prevent Chipping:
🔧 Drilling
Use sharp, high-quality 35mm Forstner or hinge bits, preferably with Teflon coating for melamine.
-
Clear chips regularly when using Forstner bits—ideally on a CNC head with controlled chip extraction.
Avoid hand-held drills for hinge holes in melamine unless absolutely necessary.
🧰 Nesting & Machining
Nest parts so hinge holes are inward - facing — not on panel edges.
Run test drills before each shift to check for edge cleanness.
If using nested-based CNCs, consider pre-drilling hinge holes after cutting, or using dedicated vertical boring machines.
🧼 Panel Handling Before Edgebanding
Inspect each panel edge for microchipping before edgebanding.
Sand or trim slightly if minor chipping is present (prevents worse chipping under pressure).
